Season Update - Challenges and Victories
Challenges and Looking Forward

This season has seen more than its share of challenges, and I wanted to update everyone on where we stand as far as getting more terrain open. We realize that only having a few core trails in the Blue Lift area is not ideal, and we are working hard to change that.
Our snowmaking water comes from the Missouri River, through a 2.5 mile pipeline up to the ski area. The advantage is that we have access to plenty of cold water all winter, but it requires a second pump station at the river. We had planned on a rebuild of our river pump in the spring after this season. This fall, it became clear we could not wait that long. The pump was pulled out and taken to GPM, inc. our pump vendor in Duluth, MN. Once we determined the extent of the work, it became clear that it was not going to be a rapid fix and would require some lead time to manufacture some of the parts. It also became clear that we would need an alternate pump in place so we could start snowmaking operations. This ended up being a diesel-powered pump from Equipment Share rentals, and a fancy shelter made from insulating blankets. This solution allowed us to move water.
It was less water than normal, and this delayed the start of snowmaking, but we were able to get going because getting terrain open is important. It also meant our team had to be at the pump every 8-10 hours to fuel it and service it to keep things running. We did this because getting open was important, and snowmaking is the key to that. We did not hit expectations early season for snowmaking, but at least we were able to open.
We reinstalled our rebuilt pump on 12/27. The pump was also modified to reduce the amount of sediment flowing into it, so we can reduce the wear that led to the rebuild in the first place.
We also dealt with failures in underground water and electrical lines. Our underground infrastructure is over 35 years old and is starting to show its age. Our team jumped into action each time, and we have repaired:
-3 underground water leaks
-Replaced almost 900 feet of underground wire so far this fall and winter.
We did this because we know getting snowmaking back online and covering terrain is important.
Our underground infrastructure is scheduled to be replaced as part of our upcoming expansion project. This will both update pipe and electrical lines, but also give us more capacity. This is important because we can run more snowmaking equipment at one time, and cover terrain faster. We are pushing forward to begin this process as quickly as we can, as this project has been delayed due to property and leasing issues. Stay tuned for more details on this.
Looking Forward
With everything that has happend however, we are excited for the rest of the season. We have some great snowmaking weather in the forecast, and we anticipate this will allow our team to open the Green Lift, add more terrain choice on the Blue Lift, and get some terrain features installed.
We have lots going on the rest of the season as well, such as:
-$30 Thursdays, with rental and lift tickets for only $30, as well as some Thursday night sessions, and Night Jam nights on the Green lift area when snowmaking wraps up.
-S'mores evenings around a new bonfire pit.
-An Olympics weekend for kids.
We promise the rest of this season will be a blast.
We would like to thank each and everyone who has come out this season and spent a day with us. Your decision to spend you hard earned money at Huff Hills makes a bit of an impact. We promise to continue to work hard as we push forward to make Huff Hills better than ever for all of you who love winter recreation.
Thanks,
